Botswana: Gambling earns govt over P9 million
The government made more than P9 million from gamblers last year, the Casino Control Board annual report ending March 2006, states. The earnings were accrued from levies and shares of entrance fees from the nine casinos operating in the country.
The overall results indicate that the gross revenue earned by all casinos for the year ended March 31, 2006 amounted to P89 million. In terms of gross revenue, Grand Palm took over the leading position, followed by Gaborone Sun. Marang Casino in Francistown, continues to maintain the third position followed by Menateng Casino in Selebi-Phikwe. The other casinos maintained their positions as in the previous year in the following order: Kings Casino - Lobatse, Admiral - Francistown, Teemane - Jwaneng, Admiral - Selebi-Phikwe and Letsatsi Casino - Palapye. The new Letsatsi Casino in Palapye commenced operations on March.
The Grand Palm Casino generated gaming revenue of P36 million for the year, a decrease of two percent compared to the corresponding period last year. The government levy increased in the same proportion. During the year under review, the licensee paid P3.7 million to the government, being entrance fees and levy. The report says revenue from the Grand Palm tables increased by 26 percent compared to last year whereas revenue from slot machines decreased by 10 percent compared to the previous year.
The Gaborone Sun casino generated gaming revenue of P31 million compared to P34 million during the same period last year, a decrease of seven percent. The Casino was relegated to second position in terms of revenue generated during the year.
During the same period, the licensee paid P3.2 million to the government being entrance fees and levy in terms of Section 21 of the Casino Act. The Marang Casino in Francistown generated revenue of P5 million compared to revenue of P6 million last year, indicating a decrease in revenue of six percent.
During the year ended 31 March, 2006, the licensee paid P500,000 to the government being entrance fees and levy.
Menateng casino in Selebi-Phikwe generated revenue of P5 million, a slight decrease compared to the previous year. During the year under review, the licensee paid P560,000 to the government Kings Casino in Lobatse generated revenue of P3 million, an increase in revenue of 10 percent compared to the previous year reflecting a good performance for the year. The casino is however, ranked fifth after Menateng Casino in terms of revenue generated.
During the year under revenue, the licensee paid P350,000 to the government. The Admiral Casino in Francistown generated revenue of P3 million, an increase in revenue of 12 percent compared to the previous year, reflecting a good performance for the year. During the year under review, the licensee paid P342,000 to the government.
The Teemane Casino in Jwaneng generated revenue of P2 million which indicated a decrease in revenue of three percent compared to the previous year.
The Admiral Casino in Selebi-Phikwe generated P900,000 which indicated an increase in revenue of 36 percent compared to the previous year. During the year under review, the casino paid P104,000 to the government.
The new Letsatsi Casino in Palapye generated gaming revenue of P100,000 during the period under review and paid P14,000 to the government. In his remarks, the chairman of the Board, Lekwalo Mosienyane said one of the important achievements is the finalisation by the Attorney General of the first draft of a comprehensive Gaming and Gambling Bill which seeks to establish a Gaming and Gambling Authority. The authority is expected to effectively control the gambling industry and to set up a national lottery.
He said the board’s focus and challenge in the coming year will be to speed up the process for the adoption and eventual implementation of the Gaming and Gambling Act.
