Caribbean Region: Former casino workers receive over $.5 million

Some 30 former employees of Kings Casino have received severance payment totaling over $500,000.

The Antigua & Barbuda Workers Union, bargaining agents for the dismissed employees facilitated the payout at its headquarters Friday.

Industrial relations officer of the A&BWU Senator Chester Hughes explained that the severance for the former employees of the casino dates back to 1995.

“The money was for an unfair dismissal which took place after Hurricane Luis when the casino got a bit of damage and the company terminated the services of all the employees unfairly.

“A picket took place in front of the casino at which time the riot squad came down there while the employees with only placards protested peacefully outside.

“At the same time the employees took the matter to the Industrial Court and the Court of Appeal which ruled in favour of the employees thus causing Kings’ Casino to pay out this money for unfair dismissal.

Senator Hughes noted that this payout is the third such payout the union is facilitating within weeks.

“In the past couple of weeks the union has been finalising payments for a number of workers who have been owed a lot of money - we paid out to Royal Antigua, we have paid out to Hawksbill Hotel, we are now paying out to Kings’ Casino and there is a pay out for the former employees of Ramada Hotel and even in Barbuda we are making payouts.”

Employees at APUA who worked on a sixth and seventh day basis were not paid the relevant overtime payment, which amounts to over $100,000. Fifty per cent of that money will be paid to the employees within the coming week

“We feel great at least we are getting some satisfaction at the end of the day and our fight has not been in vain on behalf of the workers,” enator Hughes stated.
