Casino Prince’s owner bids for fairy tale Golden Slipper success
SYDNEY — If Casino Prince lives upto his favourite billing at the A$3 million Golden Slipper, it will be a fairy tale come true. His owner Steve Smith, an ambulance driver in Sydney, won Casino Prince in a raffle at Sydney’s Star City Casino.
Casino Prince, trained by Anthony Cummings, son of the legendary Bart, has won three of his four starts, winning over A$180,000 todate. He will pick up another A$1.8 million if he wins at Rosehill, Sydney.
“The barrier draw is obviously a great result, barrier three very pleasing,” said Cummings. “We’ve got an in-form jockey and an in-form horse and going into the biggest two-year-old race in the world, so wouldn’t we be confident?”
Smith is still on a high. “I’ve often thought of all the hardship people go through to buy a horse and race it. We’ve had a dream run and I hope it continues,” said the lucky punter.
“People can spend anything from $1,000 to a million and never even see the racetrack. We’ve seen the racetrack four times and had three wins and were unlucky not to get a win first-up.
“We’re way ahead of the average punter,” Smith noted. Casino Prince will start from the favourable barrier three, which has produced the most winners in the world’s richest two-year-old race.
Diego Garcia drew barrier five, making her trainer Gai Waterhouse confident. “All I know is we’ve got a horse that is totally unassuming, he’s done everything right and he’ll be there in the finish and let me tell you your money will be well repaid,” she said.
Meanwhile, David Hayes, who lost Dubai-owned Nadeem last week due to a serious injury, pulled out one-time favourite I Got The Chills after a poor track effort yesterday.
The former Hong Kong-based trainer, is now hoping that his other runners, Miss Finland and Churchill Downs, will do well.
Hohns moves on
The departure of chief cricket selector Trevor Hohns on Tuesday was timed to perfection with Australia completing a 3-0 Test series sweep in South Africa.
After 10 years in charge, the former rebel cricketer said he was leaving for business reasons. The departure would please former Test star Mark Waugh who last month wrote that it was time for Hohns to quit due to several controversial decisions in the recent past.
His successor has a tough act to follow: Under Hohn’s 10-year reign Australia won the World Cup twice and 35 Test series.
