Gambling US granny wins $10 million on slot machine
NEW YORK — A five-cent slot machine in Atlantic City disgorged a 10-million-dollar windfall for an 84-year-old US grandmother who promptly received four marriage proposals, according to reports yesterday.
Josephine Crawford had lost 35 dollars in the machine and was down to the last of her modest stake money when she hit the jackpot on Tuesday evening at Harrah’s casino in the New Jersey gambling mecca.
It was the largest ever US nickel slot machine jackpot and the largest jackpot in Atlantic City history.
“I couldn’t believe it, and I still can’t believe it,” Crawford told the New Jersey Star Ledger.
“I’m going to take care of my family,” she said.
“I have five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. We are going to have a good time with it.” Harrah’s spokesman Alyce Parker said Crawford, a widow, had received four proposals of marriage while celebrating her win with family and casino patrons. “She said she wasn’t interested,” Parker said.
“She is very energetic, and she doesn’t look a day over 65.”
