Kuala Lumpur: Crackdown on casinos
Malaysian police have pledged to crack down on illegal casinos that are mushrooming under the guise of video arcades or amusement centres, a newspaper reported yesterday. Operators had applied for licenses to use legal game machines but later converted them for gambling, The Star newspaper quoted Criminal Investigations Department chief as saying.
The report said that the electronic machines feature games like roulette, blackjack and poker, and that players win credit points that can be exchanged for cash. Wan said in the report that police have conducted 351 raids on such outlets this year in Penang alone, seizing 1,026 machines and arresting 242 people. He vowed police would clamp down on such outlets areas and book the owners. It said many so-called family theme parks, amusement centres or video arcades in shopping complexes on Penang, a popular tourist destination, were being run as mini-casinos.
