Los Angeles: Costner eyes Dances with Wolves casino
Actor Kevin Costner has mounted a renewed legal bid to take sole control of a casino in the rugged Black Hills of South Dakota made famous in his classic Dances with Wolves. According to South Dakota Supreme Court documents, Costner (pictured) wants judges to overturn an earlier ruling by a lower court valuing the casino at $6.1 million.
Costner, who directed 1990’s best picture Oscar-winner Dances with Wolves, fired the Midnight Star casino’s managers, Francis and Carla Caneva, in 2004.
The Canevas had held a 6.5 per cent stake in the business while Costner retained a 93.5 per cent holding in the casino, which is decorated by memoribilia from the actor’s movies.
The actor hired accountants to determine how much the casino would fetch on the open market in order for him to dissolve the partnership.
Costner’s accountants valued the casino at $3.1 million. But the manager of another casino in Deadwood testified on behalf of the Canevas that he would be prepared to pay roughly twice that amount.
A lower court judge agreed with the higher figure and told Costner to pay the full price or put the casino up for sale on the open market.
