Scam Or Pure Luck?
Botswana’s Capital Gaborone: A punter’s mysterious winning streak at Gaborone Sun Casino Resort was put to a startling halt last Wednesday, when his tickets were intercepted and he was called to the manager’s office in what many believed was an end to a major ticket scam.
This followed complaints by several Gaborone Sun casino punters, who approached The Voice with suspicions that the well-known Gaborone figure (whose name will be withheld for now) was using fraudulent tickets to win thousands of cash from the Gaborone Sun casino, and was well placed to win the occasional cars up for grabs.
A reliable source (who cannot be named for security reasons), one of the regular 200 plus angry punters, told The Voice that they began smelling a rat at the beginning of the year when the alleged fraudster “emerged from nowhere” with a plastic bag containing over a thousand draw tickets.
“As loyal and dedicated punters we were concerned as it was our first time to see this man. He then filled up the tombola with his tickets and he was called four times out of six lucky winners.”
He added that the man’s mysterious winning streak continued for almost two weeks until some of the casino’s old time punters got fed up and lodged a complaint with the casino manager.
“Where this man got the tickets still remains a mystery, but word around the hotel corridors has it that two of the casino’s employees have been implicated for suspiciously giving the man close to 3000 tickets ranging from the numbers 000-00.”
Last week Wednesday night, The Voice team sat and watched in amazement as the punters’ allegations seemed to ring true. We witnessed the man’s winning ticket numbers being called more than five times out of eight lucky winners. Even though he rose up to his feet to claim his prizes for the first two tickets, for the remaining three, he froze, ignoring calls by the tombola controller to come claim his prize within sixty seconds.
It was at that moment that three white men, one of whom is believed to be the security manager and the other one the casino manager, summoned him to their office.
Mumblings intensified, with some alleging that three of the casino employees were being investigated over what may seem like a ticket scam.
Confronted, the man in question refused to speak until the investigations were concluded.
Efforts to get a comment from Gaborone Sun Hotel and Casino proved futile as the only person (the General Manager) who is at liberty to comment on the matter was out of the country on official business.
But, one of the junior managers at the casino who asked not to be quoted acknowledged that an issue of that nature had arisen, but internal investigations were still being undertaken.
