Spain to build world’s second biggest gambling centre in a desert
Madrid - The north-eastern Spanish region of Aragon has announced plans to build the world’s biggest casino complex after Las Vegas, media reported Thursday. The complex of 32 casinos, five theme or amusement parks and other forms of entertainment will be created in an area measuring more than 2,000 hectares in Los Monegros desert, where the regional authorities have pledged to bring water, electricity, roads and other infrastructure.
The cost of building the complex, which is estimated at 17 billion euros (25 billion dollars), will be covered by a group of 12 investors from countries ranging from Australia to Lebanon, the Aragonese authorities announced Wednesday evening.
The complex will include theme parks focusing on spying, space adventures and the history of civilizations, with copies of Egyptian pyramids and Roman temples.
Plans also include 70 hotels, more than 200 restaurants, 500 shops, a golf course, a bullring and horse racing.
The entertainment city is expected to draw 25 million people annually, 80 per cent of them from abroad, from 2015 onwards. That is half of the total number of tourists currently visiting Spain.
The complex is to create 65,000 jobs.
The budget of building the complex is more than twice that of the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, but Aragon regards the plan as realistic.
“The project is underway, and we will achieve it,” Aragon Vice-Premier Jose Angel Biel said. The only political party to criticise the project was the far-left Izquierda Unida, which described it as “madness.”
