U.S. also practiced ‘ethnic cleansing’

In 1838, after attempts to keep their land by legal means failed, most of the Native American Cherokee tribe was driven west by U.S. federal troops in a forced march known as the Trail of Tears. The march of almost 20,000 people resulted in the death of 4,000 people. America has devoted an incredible amount of funding and military force to the NATO offensive in Kosovo to fight for the Albanians - but when we think of “ethnic cleansing” we should first think of the Trail of Tears. We drove the Cherokee and other Native Americans off their land in Georgia; now, we Americans present ourselves as world champions of human rights.

Welcoming the Kialegee tribe’s casino business to Georgia is the least we can do to compensate Native Americans for the genocide that was committed against them. We welcome the Albanian refugees, but are turning away the Kialegee who are only trying to reestablish themselves in their ancestral home, with dignity, through free enterprise. The Kialegee’s casino will benefit the local economy where it’s established.

As a state, and as a nation, should make peace with ourselves for the “ethnic cleansing” we’ve swept under our national rug. We should not sit in our churches and pass judgement on Native Americans again.
